The first day of CES has come to a close in Las Vegas, Nevada, and with it came the news from Lenovo about a new sub-brand, Legion. Legion, much like Asus’s Predator and Republic of Gamers brands, aims to target only one audience, gamers. The Lenovo Legion gaming brand debuts not with one, but two new gaming laptops, the Lenovo Legion Y720 and Y520 Laptops – two powerful gaming PCs designed for mainstream and enthusiast players.
The Lenovo Legion laptops are outfitted with up to the latest Nvidia graphics cards, with the GTX 1060 on the Y720 and the GTX 1050 on the Y520. Processing speed for both laptops is provided by Intel’s latest 7th Gen Core i7 processors, though the Y720 features a higher-end, quad-core Core i7-7700HQ. Furthermore, both laptops feature 16GB of DDR4 memory.

The display for the Y720 is a matte 4K display option at up to 3840 x 2160 pixels, whilst the Y520 comes out with a 1080p screen. RBG keyboards are a gamers delight, and like every other gaming laptop out there, the Y720 comes with backlit keys that can change colour. Meanwhile, the Y520 is restricted to red colour backlit keys that are an optional feature.
However, the Lenovo Legion brand aims to stand out with a specific feature on the Y720: Dolby Atmos support. It is the only laptop available that currently supports the sound format, which emulates surround sound when using stereo headphones. However, very few games currently support Dolby Atmos as sound needs to be recorded in 3D space. Overwatch is currently the only big game that offers Dolby Atmos support.
When it comes to the battery, Lenovo rates the Y720 at 5 hours of battery life thanks to the 60 WHr battery and the Y520 at 4 hours with a smaller battery. However, as I always say when it comes to laptops, and especially gaming laptops, expect the battery life to be a little lower.
Will the Lenovo Legion gaming brand take off, or will it stutter much like the similar partnership Lenovo had with Razer over a year ago?
