Lenovo launches the Vibe Z in the UAE

GEEK DESK

Jan 15

While our own @khaledtron was busy documenting his trip with the Vibe X, Lenovo was preparing to launch their new flagship smartphone — and their which supports LTE — in the UAE. On a slightly chilly Dubai evening, Lenovo celebrated the Vibe X with Khaled as he shared his memories and talked about how impressed he was with the phone. And we were impressed as well — those 5MP wide-angle selfies looked fantastic.

The event went on with the unveiling of the Vibe Z — not a successor per se but rather a different phone altogether, featuring android 4.3, the snappy Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 quad core clocked at 2.2GHz, and an f/1.8 lens on the camera for serious night time photography. And yes, the 5MP wide-angle selfie front camera is still there.

It's a beautiful phone.
It’s a beautiful phone.

We’ve toyed around with the Vibe Z and we can confirm that it is indeed fast. The UI feels good and transitions are thankfully snappy. We’ve experienced no lag and the phone did not succumb to hiccups no matter how many apps we’ve opened and closed. And despite its size, it is very light — at 147 grams it is almost impossible to feel you’re carrying anything in your hand. The finishing is pretty slick, sporting an industrial design.

The phone will retail for AED 1,999. You can download the full spec sheet here.

For the official press release:

Lenovo (HKSE: 992) (ADR: LNVGY) today announced that its first LTE smartphone, the Lenovo Vibe Z, will be available in the UAE end of February at all major retailers, retailing at AED 1999.

The stylish razor-thin, blazing-fast Vibe Z smartphone is equipped with gesture controls, photo enhancement software and other premium technologies, and is Lenovo’s first smartphone that makes use of 4G/LTE capabilities, offering true mobile freedom with super-fast data download at up to 150 Mbit/s1 and upload at up to 50 Mbit/s1 to satisfy even the most data hungry of individuals. The Vibe Z also comes with 802.11ac WiFi and Bluetooth 4.0.

“The Lenovo Vibe smartphones are designed to cater to intuitive and trendy users who demand stylish, fast and sleek smartphones to stay connected, share picture perfect photos and enjoy multimedia videos and gaming on full HD screens,” said Oliver Ebel, Lenovo MEA Vice President.

Ebel added: “With the expansion of our Smartphone portfolio, Lenovo continues to diversify its business and build a strong foundation for the future in the PC Plus era. According to IDC Q3FY13, Lenovo, in a short period, has become the world’s third largest smartphone supplier, rapidly expanding shipments 78 percent year-over-year. This is a testament to Lenovo’s rapid ongoing transformation into a PC Plus company.”

The svelte Vibe Z comes encased in a thin 7.9mm silver or titanium body weighing just 147 grams. Users will appreciate its laser-etched, fabric-feel rear cover that is comfortable to hold and its 5.5-in full high definition (1920×1080) IPS wide angle viewing touchscreen display. Images appear pin sharp, leveraging the Vibe Z’s 20/20 Vision display with a pixel density of 400 pixels per inch. While beautiful on the outside, the Vibe Z packs in superior performance technologies inside starting with its Qualcomm Snapdragon™ 800 Quad-core 2.2GHz processor to deliver extreme performance for watching movies, capturing and editing photos, multitasking among apps, playing games and video chatting. Loaded with 2 GB of memory, up to 16 GB of internal storage and running Android 4.3, the Vibe Z offers plenty of space for thousands of favorite photos dozens of videos.

With its custom imaging software and high resolution cameras, the Vibe Z surpasses the shutterbug features of other smartphones. It has a 13 MP rear camera with a large f1.8 aperture lens to defy low light situations and capture breathtaking photos and a 5 MP front camera that’s equipped with an 84° lens for wide-angle shots. Lenovo’s Super Camera and Super Gallery apps let users add fun effects to their photos easily. Additionally Vibe Z offers Lenovo-specific software supporting motion and gestures for better one-handed usage on large screen devices
