iPhone 6 & iPhone 6 Plus quick hands-on

GEEK DESK

Today we were invited by Jadopado for a special hands-on session with the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, both of which will be hitting the UAE stores by next week (although if you can’t wait that long, you can order either from them here).

I have to admit that I was very excited that the iPhone 6 is bigger in size. Having spent the past 5 years on various android handsets, I’ve grown accustomed to the larger real estate and switching to an iPhone 5S made me feel claustrophobic (though I eventually adapted).

The iPhone 6 is just perfectly sized for my hands, which tend to accommodate 4.5″ to 4.7″ screens really well. The phone’s curves from both sides make it comfortable to hold, and the blending of the screen into the aluminium frame from the sides does make it feel easier to hold than other smartphones that tend to have angular sides. As tempted as I am to constantly find faults in Apple and not drink the Kool-Aid, I have to admit that the 4.7″ phone does NOT feel big at all but rather feels smaller than it actually is.

In terms of weight, even though it’s a little heavier than the 5S, the weight is distributed across more space so it actually feels lighter than the 5S.

The iPhone 6 Plus, however, is another story. It’s a really big phone and I am definitely not its  target audience. It’s way too big for me, and while using it I found myself double tapping the home button more than I ever wanted to just to reach everything in the upper half of the screen. It’s designed for dedicated two-handed usage with full attention.

The screen and icons looked great on both and iOS finally has more room to breathe in. Calendar app looks especially easy on the eyes.

That’s it for our quick hands-on. Stay tuned for the review soon.
