Our smartphone screen technologies have advanced above and beyond what they were five years ago, demanding crisp, high resolution images. Yet Instagram photos have been stuck in their 640px resolution, one which had served its purpose but is due for an upgrade.
And that upgrade is coming: Instagram is to boost the image resolution to 1080 x 1080.
However, this is not retroactive; we checked an image that has been uploaded a few days ago, and it is 640px on the server, while an image that has been uploaded yesterday sits at 1080px.
The image updates will be rolling out in the coming few days, so expect clearer, crisper images on your mobile devices soon.
