Back in 2013, Instagram launched a direct-message system that allowed users to send each other photos privately, up to a group of 15 people. Despite the feature being questionable as to why would such a platform need direct messages to begin with, it apparently has proven popular, with 85 million users actively sending private messages every month.

Today, the company is adding some welcome improvements and functionalities. For starters, gone is the need to start a new thread every time you send a photo. Threads are not built around the group of people the first photo was sent to, and a conversation then follows, even when more photos and text are added. Second, photos from the main feed can now be sent through the direct message platform as well.
All privacy settings remain the same – only recipients see the photos and conversations, and those with private profiles can safely share photos and only those who follow them will be able to view them.
The update is out already and should be activated soon. Let us know what you think about it in the comments.
