Back in Feb, news started circulating about a super cheap smartphone being developed in India. The news quickly drew a lot of criticism and was questioned by many as being a scam. Well, it now seems that the project is a reality, and will be hitting the shelves soon.

Ringing Bells, the company behind the concept says it will start shipping the ‘Freedom 251’ phone to its customers in India this week.
So what does a $4 smartphone give you?
The ‘Freedom 251’ phone packs a 4-inch screen with a 960 x 540 pixel resolution, powered by a quad-core 1.3Ghz processor, 1GB of RAM, 8GB of storage, a MicroSD card slot, and an 1800mAh battery…..oh, and an 8-megapixel rear camera with a 3.2-megapixel front shooter. It runs on Android 5.1.

The phone’s performance is still a mystery. We’ll update this story as the devices starts to ship.
