IFA 2015: Motorola unveils the new Moto 360, with a sports model

The Moto 360 is regarded as one of the finest in Android Wear, and Motorola is adamant on being the poster-boy for the platform with their new Moto 360, a watch that improves on everything from the previous model, and then some.

Last year’s model, although great, had some issues with its uncomfortably large size and battery performance. Motorola has realised that people’s wrists are not made equally, so the company is releasing three different versions: a men’s watch that comes in two sizes, a model that’s more elegant aimed at women, and a “sports edition” model that you can take to the gym. As is typical now of Motorola, there are over 300 combinations of straps, colours, bezels, and sizes. Best of all, you can start with the pre-orders today.

As for the different models, the men’s edition comes in 46mm and 42mm, and the women’s edition comes with in 42mm with a narrower, more elegant strap at 16mm. Men’s watches have a silver, gold, or black finishing, and the women get a rose gold instead of black. The new sizes and colours are certainly a welcome change, positioning the Moto 360 as a functional fashion accessory more than just a gadget. As for the Sports edition, it comes with a fixed silicone strap at 42mm with a dedicated GPS chip, so it does come off more of a sports-gadget.

The watch is powered by a Snapdragon 400 processor, and the battery life gains an improvement and will last two days on the larger models and a day and a half on the smaller ones. They also run the latest Android Wear, making them compatible with iOS and Android.

What’s more interesting though, is that despite the “flat tyre” look, the Moto 360 still has more screen space than all other watches, including Apple’s. Many haven’t been a fan of the “dick bar” at the bottom of the watch, but it allows the Moto 360 to house an ambient light sensor there, which isn’t present on other watches.

We hope that Motorola has what it takes to keep its status as poster-boy for Android Wear. If Motorola does deliver on those promises (especially battery performance), then we do have a winner.
