Google has just announced that it has an upcoming event on the 4th of October in San Francisco, where speculation points it to be the unveiling event for the company’s new flagship smartphones. Google’s flagship smartphones have been synonymous with the name Nexus, but this year it looks like Google is looking to ditch the Nexus branding, opting for a simple “G” logo on the new Google Pixel phones. A website set up for the event seems to confirm this.

The Pixel branding has only been adopted by one other Google device, the Pixel C tablet, but speculation points to the new smartphones adopting the moniker. Yes, there will be two smartphones. HTC is believed to be the manufacturer behind both devices, one called the HTC Pixel and the other called the HTC Pixel XL. From the names itself, we can figure that size would be a major difference. The Pixel will reportedly have a 5-inch display, while the Pixel XL will feature a 5.5-inch panel. Both devices may feature an all metal body, something similar to the Nexus 6P.
However, in a step away from tradition, Android Police report that both devices will ship with a specialised version of Android Nougat, instead of the basic stock version that Nexus users loved. Further specs about the devices are unknown, though considering that these are Google’s flagship smartphones, you can expect them to follow in line with the Nexus smartphones and adopt the latest technology available in the smartphone market. Considering that Android Nougat will also feature support for virtual reality, through the Daydream platform, expect both Google Pixel devices to pack meaty processors for performance.
However, the following images were pulled from the code on the website set up for the tease, and seem to highlight the phones’ cameras; one shows the body of a smartphone in between two neon ropes. All will be unveiled on the 4th of October.
