Google Maps now allows user to download maps to their phone, and get turn-by-turn directions and other info offline.
Whereas before you could simply view an area of the map offline, now you can get turn-by-turn driving directions, search for specific destinations, and find useful information about places, like hours of operation, contact information or ratings, Google product manager Amanda Bishop said in a blog post.
Google Maps previously had a limited offline feature where it lets users save an area ahead of time, but lacked navigation and other online features.
Once you get the updated app (rolling out for Android now, with iOS coming soon), you can add offline content by:
- Search for a city or country and tap “download” on the results page.
- Go to “Offline Areas” in the main menu click the “+” button, then type the destination
