Google has launched “Contributor’, a new way to fund the web and publishers.
Contributor is designed to allow users on the web to pay a small monthly fee towards sites they like and frequently visit, and in return, Google will remove its ads from the site and guarantee contributors an ad free browsing experience.
The contributions will range between $1, $2 or $3 a month and will cover 10 sites as a start with names such as Mashable, Imgur, The Onion and WikiHow. In its initial beta launch, the service will only work with U.S. sites and will spread globally later. Users will be able to pay using their own Google account.
For publishers, the contributions are handled through their Google advertising accounts.
Once contributions are made, user will see a message from the publisher, thanking them for their contribution.
If you want try out Contributor as a reader, you can do so now, by submitting a request to Google on its website (Requests are only for the beta stage). Publishers who are interested in taking part in this experiment can also participate by sending an email to contributor@google.com.
