In what may seem initially confusing, Foursquare is splitting itself into two distinct apps: Swarm and Foursquare.
The move comes after careful investigation of how users engage with the app and the result of the endeavour to decrease app bloat. Swarm app – launching for iOS, android, and Windows Phone (at a later stage) – is your check-in and friend-finding app. It is aimed to be simple, fast, and efficient with a focused goal: find where your friends are and check in.
The Foursquare app itself will be re-invented to focus on discovery. Foursquare describes this as the digital Yellow Pages:
Local search today is like the digital version of browsing through the Yellow Pages (remember those?). We believe local search should be personalized to your tastes and informed by the people you trust. The opinions of actual experts should matter, not just strangers.
