Facebook is continuing to tweak News Feed to improve the user experience, and in the latest attempt, the social media network said it’s going to factor in the time you spend on posts to improve your News Feed experience.
Facebook conducted some research and found out that if users haven’t commented, liked or shared a post, it doesn’t necessarily mean they weren’t interested in it. Facebook explains that these factors are usually considered to determine what to show at the top of your News Feed. But in some instances, for example you might not want to hit the Like button on a natural disaster even if you’re interested in finding out all of the details by reading the entire story, which in this case won’t push the specific piece of news up.
This is why Facebook is going to start measuring the time spent on posts in addition to its standard factors to improve News Feed experience. If users spend time on one post it’ll get noticed, and that signal will then be used to surface what is perceived to be the most relevant content for that user.
Facebook said that the new algorithm update is out and roll out to different markets in the coming weeks.
