Facebook messenger standalone App received an a major overhaul on iOS and Android.

The star feature of this update is that the app allows users to message anyone in their contacts who has the Messenger app, not just Facebook friends.

The App pairs phone numbers with Facebook Messenger accounts, meaning users can contact each other even if they are not being associated on Facebook.  All communications move through Facebook’s servers.

In addition to phone number feature, the latest Facebook app includes new in-app sounds and updated UI, FB icons that appear next to friends’ names when they are online.

“The speed of messaging also improved, meaning the app works much more like SMS or texting than it did before”, said Peter Martinazzi, the Messenger product manager at Facebook.

“The new versions of the app were also built specifically for Android and iOS operating systems, meaning the icons, color schemes, and layouts were designed to feel more natural on each OS”, said Martinazzi.
