Facebook has released a new standalone app that allows smartphone users to privately share photos of friends, by sifting through images with facial recognition technology.
“Moments” allows users to create groups based on when they were taken and who is in them, scans images for faces, matches them to your Facebook friends and allows you to share them with those people though the app or add the photos to a private album.
Moments uses facial recognition technology developed by Facebook’s Artificial Intelligence Research (FAIR) lab.

The app is currently only available in the United States, on Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android and will be coming to other countries over time, the release stated.
We’re looking forward to offering it to more people around the world in the coming months, including in places where the face recognition technology that drives the app isn’t currently available, A Facebook spokesperson said.
