Facebook is working on a “Dislike”….or empathy button

In a Q+A session held at Facebook’s headquarters, Mark Zuckerberg said the company is bringing a button that would let people express empathy. He said Facebook was “very close” to having it ready for testing.

People have asked about the ‘dislike’ button for many years,  Zuckerberg said. Probably hundreds of people have asked about this, and today is a special day because today is the day that I actually get to say we are working on it, and are very close to shipping a test of it.

However, Zuckerberg said that he did not want this button to turn Facebook into a forum where people are voting up or down on people’s posts. “Dislike,” or whatever it may be called at the end, will serve as a way to like a post that would be awkward to “Like” such as solidarity with a tragedy or events like a death or a loss.

The CEO also discussed Oculus virtual reality platform, saying that the experience they are preparing is “not only going to be things that are in the world, but you’ll be able to experience things that aren’t even possible to experience in the world”.
