Facebook announced that it has hired eBay’s PayPal division head David Marcus. David will be leading the social network’s efforts to boost its mobile messaging and eventually monetising the product.
The appointment of Marcus comes with Facebook preparing to finalise its acquisition of WhatsApp, in a deal worth $19 billion.
“Messaging is a core part of Facebook’s service and key to achieving our mission of making the world more open and connected,” said a Facebook statement announcing the Marcus appointment.
In a post on his own Facebook and LinkedIn pages, David Marcus said that Facebook chief Mark Zuckerberg persuaded him to take the new job.
“Every day around 12 billion messages are sent on Facebook… We’re excited by the potential to continue developing great new messaging experiences that better serve the Facebook community and reach even more people, and David will be leading these efforts.”
