The UAE government is planning to launch drones that will deliver official packages and documents such as driver’s licenses and ID cards, Reuters reported on Monday.
The drones will be fitted with fingerprint and eye scanners to ensure a secure and guaranteed deliveries to the correct recipients.
“The UAE will try to deliver its government services through drones. This is the first project of its kind in the world,” said Mohammed Abdullah Al Gergawi, the Minister of Cabinet Affairs in the UAE government.
The drones are battery-operated and measure about 1.5 feet and will be capable to carry small packages.
Gergawi also said the drones would be tested for durability and efficiency in Dubai for six months, before being introduced across the UAE within a year. The program still faces obstacles such as high summer temperatures which exceed 40 degrees Centigrade and heavy sandstorms.
“Within a year from now we will understand the capabilities of the system and what sort of services, and how far we can deliver. Eventually a new product will be launched across all the country,” Gergawi said.
