Canon develops a 250MP sensor

Photographers don’t always swear by the megapixel count, but that doesn’t stop anyone from pushing the limit of what the sensors can do. Canon, though, has developed a whopping 250MP sensor … and it fits inside a DSLR.

The sensor is measures 29.2mm x 20.2 mm, which is smaller than a “full frame” 35mm sensor (which measures 35mm x 24mm). With those specs, images come out at 19’580×12’600 pixels – so detailed, in fact, that you can “distinguish of lettering on the side of an airplane flying at a distance of approximately 18 km from the shooting location”. That’s quite impressive.

As for video, the resolution is 125 times higher than Full-HD and 30 times higher than 4K.

If you’re looking to get your hands on this sensor any time soon, you’re out of luck; Canon is planning to deploy the technology in surveillance, crime prevention tools and other industries that require incredibly detailed imagery. While one is thinking Big Brother, we hope NASA fits this into one of its shuttles in the future.
