Sources in BlackBerry have confirmed to Reuters that the company will be shipping android-powered BlackBerry devices in the future, a move that will be part of BlackBerry’s strategy in focusing on software and device management.
BlackBerry’s Chief Executive John Chen believes the new device management system – BES12 – will be a differentiating factor, as it allows corporate and government clients to manage BlackBerry devices as well as devices by other manufacturers (including Apple, Microsoft, and android-powered devices) on their internal networks. By releasing android-powered BlackBerry devices, the company is sending a signal of confidence to clients that the BES12 system works.
The company, however, is not planning to ditch the BlackBerry OS anytime soon, and released a statement of their commitment to the platform.
We don’t comment on rumors and speculation, but we remain committed to the BlackBerry 10 operating system, which provides security and productivity benefits that are unmatched.
It would be interesting to see a keyboard-operated android system on a BlackBerry device. This for sure is a sentence we didn’t expect to be typing anytime soon.
