Apple is planning to shift iPhone’s display technology from LCD to OLED by 2018, pending supplier’s capacity to manufacture the displays — up to 200 million — as well as testing durability, given that the brightness and energy-saving capabilities of OLEDs are known to degrade over time.
Samsung is currently the only manufacturer that can pop out OLED screens en-masse, but LG Display also has the capacity to produce the screens and is planning to expand production in anticipation of Apple’s move.
