iPhone drops are a phenomena that send shivers down anyone’s spine — and make for awesome slow-motion videos. There are thousands of iPhone covers with all sorts of protection, but Apple is considering taking the matter into their own hands according to this patent. Who else would be better equipped in protecting the iPhone other than Apple itself, right?
According to the patent, the spring-loaded bumpers will reside in the corners of your phone — the most likely point of impact. Inputs from the gyroscope, microphone, and accelerator sensors will determine whether the phone experiencing a drop, and the bumper will activate to protect your phone from damage. These bumpers are also buoyant, helping your phone stay afloat should you drop it into the pool.
We recommend you use your phone sensibly — no texting while driving, no instagramming from a moving train or while crossing the road, and no selfie taking while catapulting yourself into the pool. Still, if Apple goes through with this, future iPhones will score better in drop tests.
