It seems that Google’s “Silver” program does indeed exist, as per a new report from The Information.
The Information reports that Google is aiming to have more control over the Android ecosystem and develop a Nexus-style program with deeper control and a wider partnerships with carriers and OEMs based on incentives. The move is most likely to take back control of Android from companies like Samsung.
The incentives could include indirect payments in promoting Silver devices through campaigns and in-store displays and marketing, The Information also suggested that the program would also require that Silver phones carry a very limited number of non-Google apps.
The Information says the program will also support the development of hardware features like waterproofing and other advanced options. LG and Motorola are said to be early partners in this program.
The report claims a launch date of next year in the U.S., Germany and Japan.
