Android phones to get “3D Touch”

When the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus came out a few months ago, people were wowed by the 3D touch capabilities of the smartphone; being able to apply more force to the screen to view more options instead of tapping or swiping away was an interesting premise. Sure it may lead to a dented screen when you start getting frustrated at a Candy Crush level but hopes are the damage won’t be permanent.

However, much like a console gamer applying more pressure than needed to a controller, it is natural to see everyone hop aboard the 3D Touch train.

According to GizmoChina, the majority of the main Android phone makers from China are all leaping aboard the 3D Touch train: Xiaomi, Meizu, Oppo and Vivo all have some version of the technology in the pipeline, according to insider sources. They will join the ranks of pressure-sensitive smartphones that are currently only being filled by the iPhone 6s, the Huawei Mate S and the ZTE Axon Mini. Furthermore the still unveiled Nexus that HTC is reportedly making for Google will also feature a pressure-sensitive display. In addition to all the hubbub, Google also plans to incorporate the feature as a standard for Android as a whole.

Unfortunately while 3D Touch is quite a novel feature, we haven’t seen widespread use of it; even on the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus it was mostly limited to the native Apple apps, each using some form of 3D touch capabilities. However with the rise of more smartphones incorporating pressure-sensitive displays and some form of 3D Touch it is likely that we’ll see the introduction of these smartphones to the market as a catalyst that will spur app developers to introduce features in their apps that take advantage of these capabilities.
