Apple consumers will be delighted to hear of Other World Computing’s latest gizmo that the company unveiled at CES 2017. The attachment called the OWC DEC is meant to be attached to the bottom of your MacBook Pro for added functionality.
The OWC DEC augments your MacBook Pro by adding 4 TB of storage space, an SD Card Slot, USB Type-A ports for using standard USB devices, and a Gigabit Ethernet port, greatly increasing the amount of I/O ports available, and that are usable, on the MacBook Pro.
“We’ve been developing this concept for over three years and feel now is the perfect time for this ground-breaking product. Storage space is always at a premium on a laptop and without the potential to upgrade the factory drive, the OWC DEC brings that option back in addition to cleanly supporting the gear we all rely on.”
– Larry O’Connor, CEO & Founder of OWC.
What may irk users is the design of the DEC. To say that it is bulky would be an understatement, especially when compared to the slim MacBook Pro. According to OWC, 2016 MacBook Pro with the attachment is as thick as the 2012 MacBook Pro, which comes in at 0.95 inches. That’s a .36-inch difference from the device’s 0.59-inch standalone build. Furthermore, while the weight hasn’t been revealed we can guess that it will be significant. However, the fact that it attaches to the bottom of the MacBook Pro should keep the overall footprint the same. Additionally, the DEC’s colour matches that of the MacBook Pro, giving a more seamless appearance.
The OWC DEC is expected to be available during the second quarter of 2017, though specific pricing and availability details are still unclear. Furthermore, all the images OWC have given us of the DEC do not show all the I/O ports available on the DEC.
