On Monday, the Taiwanese based company unveiled their plans to manufacture and sell virtual reality backpack PCs and other peripheral devices next year to complement its new VR device, the StarVR, which Acer partnered with back in May.

Acer StarVR

The StarVR, for those of you who don’t know, is a virtual reality headset that’s being developed by Starbreeze and Acer. It boasts real-time six degrees of freedom, 360-degree submillimetre optical tracking and IMU and optical sensor fusion for a low-latency experience. Furthermore, it features a lighter design at 380g, optimised lenses for a better vertical field of view, a removable face interface, a new head mounting system and optical optimisation across hardware and software. However, the creme da la creme of the StarVR is its 210-degree horizontal field of view which is considerably more than rivals.

Acer is involved in the design, manufacturing, promotion, marketing and sales of the StarVR HMD to the professional and location-based entertainment market. Jerry Kao, president of Acer’s IT products business, stated that the efforts to introduce VR backpack PCs and other related devices will be aimed at building a VR application ecology for the growing technology. The StarVR is expected to be adopted for use in a Los Angeles-based VR center of the global cinema chain IMAX by the end of this year.

The VR backpack PCs and peripheral products will target the business to business market, Kao said, adding that Acer is hoping to work with its business clients to expand VR technology applications.

To back up its VR endeavour, Acer has unveiled and sold a slew of gaming products over the past year, including the Acer Predator 17X notebook and the G1 desktop, both of which are VR ready.
