Many might not be aware of Android’s history and how it all started, but Android started as an independent company founded by Andy Rubin back in 2003. At that time it wasn’t widely known, until it got Google’s attention.
Google acquired the company and its operating system in 2005. After the acquisition by Google the team started working on device prototype and released the first Android powered handsets. While it did take some time for Android devices to become popular, Android now dominates the global market with more than 53 percent of all smartphone market share at the end of 2014, while Apple’s iOS had 41.6 percent, according to comScore. Globally, Android had more than 1 billion monthly active users in June 2014, Google said.
