YouTube is expanding its Premium subscription with a fresh round of perks, giving paying users more control over playback, better audio, and smarter tools for Shorts.
One of the biggest changes is the ability to crank playback speeds up to 4x. While YouTube has long allowed videos to play at double speed, Premium members can now fine-tune speeds in tiny 0.05 increments, making it easier to zip through lectures, podcasts, or long-form videos. The feature, once experimental, is now live on Android, iOS, and web.
Enhanced audio is also rolling out more widely. Previously limited to YouTube Music and opt-in testers, Premium subscribers on Android and iOS can now enjoy richer sound on official music videos and Art Tracks in the main YouTube app. It’s a smaller rollout compared to podcasts or general content, but it signals YouTube’s intent to make Premium a stronger value proposition for music listeners.
Meanwhile, the “Jump Ahead” feature—designed to skip directly to key parts of a video—is expanding to smart TVs and gaming consoles. Already available on mobile and web, it uses AI and user data to predict where most people want to fast-forward, making long uploads easier to navigate.
YouTube is also giving Shorts some overdue attention. Premium users on iOS can now automatically download Shorts based on viewing history, keeping them accessible offline. Picture-in-picture, previously limited to Android and early iOS testers, is also rolling out fully to iPhone and iPad.
These upgrades follow the recent launch of YouTube’s Labs program, which lets users test AI-driven experiments before broader rollout. Together, they point to YouTube doubling down on Premium as a way to keep subscribers locked in with features that go beyond simply removing ads.
