YouTube Music introduces minimalist player redesign with new queue and lyrics view

YouTube Music has started rolling out a redesigned media player interface for Android and iOS, introducing a cleaner and more minimalist look in line with Google’s Material 3 Expressive design language. The new layout repositions key controls, simplifies the lower section of the screen, and introduces more dynamic ways to view lyrics and manage queues.

One of the most noticeable changes is the relocation of the music/video toggle. Previously sitting at the top of the playback screen, it now sits beneath the playback progress bar. That bar itself has been refreshed to feel more prominent, becoming thicker when tapped, while playback controls have shifted to a new position directly below it for a more consistent layout.

The bottom of the interface has been stripped down, with a stronger focus on the now-playing station or the next songs in the queue, cutting down on the visual clutter of earlier versions. This change makes the player look less crowded while still keeping essential information at hand.

A new split-screen playback mode gives users more control over how they view and manage upcoming tracks. Dragging the queue indicator upward to the midpoint reveals the queue alongside shrunken album artwork. Pulling further or tapping the queue name expands it into a full-screen list. This flexible view makes it easier to browse and adjust what’s coming up without having to leave the playback screen.

Lyrics have also received a design refresh. They’re still accessible via a dedicated button under the progress bar, but instead of appearing against a transparent background, they now display on a solid gray backdrop to improve readability and visual consistency.

The update is being released gradually through a server-side rollout, meaning some users will see the new interface sooner than others depending on region and device. Once fully deployed, the redesign will mark one of the most significant visual updates to YouTube Music in recent years, reflecting Google’s ongoing effort to unify its apps under the Material 3 aesthetic.
