Xiaomi launches bone conduction headphones 2 with swim mode and offline playback

Xiaomi has released the second generation of its bone conduction headphones in China, priced at 699 yuan (around $97). Known as the Bone Conduction Headphones 2, the new model retains the open-ear design introduced in 2022 but brings several updates aimed at swimmers, outdoor users, and those seeking a wireless alternative to traditional earbuds.

The headset uses a titanium alloy frame wrapped in silicone for flexibility and durability while maintaining a light overall weight. Its IP68 certification makes it suitable for aquatic use, rated for submersion up to five meters for as long as two hours. This places it among the more rugged consumer-grade audio devices designed for active environments.

One of the headline features is a newly introduced Swim Mode, developed with input from sports tech company Suunto. This mode integrates a swim-specific algorithm that can track pace, stroke count, distance, and breathing angle during use, offering a level of metric-based feedback typically found in high-end fitness wearables. While it won’t replace a dedicated smartwatch for in-depth tracking, it adds functionality that many open-ear headphone users in aquatic settings have lacked.

The headphones come with 32GB of onboard storage, enabling users to listen to music and podcasts without relying on a paired smartphone. Supported formats include MP3, FLAC, WAV, AAC, M4A, and APE. A physical switch allows users to toggle between Bluetooth streaming and local playback, making it easier to switch modes during workouts or travel.

Audio hardware has been upgraded with a racetrack-style vibration driver designed to improve bass and midrange performance. Xiaomi has also refined the internal acoustic structure to deliver clearer vocals and more defined sound separation. Listeners can switch among three listening profiles—Daily, Outdoor, and Swimming—tailored for specific environments and conditions.

Battery life is rated at up to 12 hours on a full charge. A quick 10-minute recharge yields up to three hours of use, offering flexibility for users on the go. For calls, the headphones include dual ENC microphones to reduce background noise. Bluetooth support includes dual-device pairing and integration with Xiaomi’s HyperOS Connect platform for fast switching between compatible ecosystem products.

While the Bone Conduction Headphones 2 are currently limited to the Chinese market, the combination of waterproofing, fitness features, and independent playback functionality could appeal to users looking for an alternative to in-ear devices, especially during swimming or other high-motion activities.
