Elon Musk’s X (formerly Twitter) has quietly begun using your posts and interactions to train its Grok AI chatbot, but there’s a way to opt out – if you know where to look.
This move, which automatically enrolls users in the AI training program, has raised eyebrows among privacy advocates and even caught European regulators off guard. While X claims the data collection is intended to improve the platform’s user experience, it’s crucial to understand how to protect your privacy.
How X is Using Your Data (and How to Stop It)
X’s Grok AI chatbot is being trained on the very content you create – your tweets, replies, and interactions. This practice is common in the AI industry, but X’s silent implementation and automatic opt-in have drawn criticism.
Thankfully, you can easily opt out, but only through the desktop website, as the mobile app doesn’t yet offer this setting:
- Open X on your desktop computer.
- Click on “More” in the left sidebar.
- Navigate to “Settings and privacy.”
- Select “Privacy and safety.”
- Scroll down and click on “Grok.”
- Uncheck the box that allows your data to be used for training.
Regulatory Concerns in Europe
X’s actions may violate the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which safeguards the privacy of European citizens. The Irish Data Protection Commission (DPC), responsible for overseeing X’s compliance, has expressed surprise at the platform’s move and is actively seeking clarification.
This isn’t the first time a tech giant has faced scrutiny over data collection practices. Meta (formerly Facebook) recently faced similar issues when it attempted to collect public data from European users without their explicit consent.
Remember, your data is valuable, and you have the right to control how it’s used. Stay informed and take the necessary steps to safeguard your privacy in the digital age.
