With AI strategy in flux, Apple considers buying Perplexity to fill Google void

Apple is reportedly exploring the possibility of acquiring Perplexity AI, a rising player in the generative AI space, as it seeks to bolster its underwhelming artificial intelligence portfolio. According to early reports, Apple executives have internally discussed both a potential acquisition and a strategic partnership with the startup—though no formal moves have been made and Perplexity itself was unaware of any acquisition interest as of this writing.

The discussions appear to be part of a broader contingency plan in case Apple is forced to end its lucrative search deal with Google. That agreement—reportedly worth $20 billion annually—ensures Google remains the default search engine on Safari. But an ongoing antitrust case may force Apple to dismantle the arrangement, which could leave a significant gap in Apple’s ecosystem and revenue stream.

If that happens, Perplexity AI could be positioned as a replacement—offering a more AI-native, conversational search experience. Perplexity has drawn attention for its robust AI platform, known for quickly delivering summarized, sourced answers to complex queries. An Apple-backed implementation could bring that functionality deeper into the iPhone and Mac experience, potentially replacing or complementing Siri and Safari.

While the acquisition remains speculative, the rationale is clear. Apple has struggled to keep pace with rivals in the AI arms race. Features announced under the “Apple Intelligence” branding at WWDC 2024 are still largely absent, and efforts to revamp Siri have yet to materialize. Meanwhile, competitors like Google and Samsung have integrated their AI offerings more aggressively into flagship devices, giving Android users a clear edge in this area.

Apple is reportedly also in talks to bring Google’s Gemini AI model to the iPhone, echoing Samsung’s recent move with Galaxy S25 devices. But a proprietary AI platform—like one powered by Perplexity—could give Apple greater control and long-term stability, especially if its partnership with Google becomes untenable.

The stakes are high. AI capabilities are becoming a defining factor in smartphone purchasing decisions, and Apple risks falling further behind if it doesn’t secure a stronger AI strategy. Perplexity’s team and tech could accelerate Apple’s progress not only in mobile but across future products like a smart home hub or AR glasses. While the financial cost of such an acquisition would be significant, the strategic benefits could extend well beyond the current product cycle.

For now, Apple’s AI roadmap remains uncertain, but its interest in Perplexity signals that the company is actively exploring alternatives in case its search engine foundation shifts dramatically.
