WhatsApp tests quiz-based engagement tools for channels

WhatsApp is testing a new way to increase engagement within channels, introducing quiz-based interactions in its latest iOS beta release. The feature, currently available through TestFlight, suggests that the platform is continuing to experiment with tools that encourage more active participation rather than passive content consumption.

The new option, referred to as Channel Quiz, was first reported by WABetaInfo and is aimed specifically at channel administrators. With this tool, admins can create quizzes by entering a question and offering multiple possible answers. Unlike standard polls, quizzes require one answer to be marked as correct before the post can be published, shifting the interaction away from opinion-based voting and toward knowledge-based participation.

Admins also have the option to attach images to individual answer choices, allowing quizzes to be used for a broader range of content. This could include visual identification challenges, educational prompts, or product-related questions, depending on the channel’s focus. Once a quiz is live, followers can select an answer and immediately see whether their choice was correct. If the correct option is selected, the app displays a brief confetti animation, adding a light visual response without significantly altering the overall channel experience.

From an administrative perspective, the feature provides feedback on how followers engage with each quiz. Channel owners can see how many participants selected each answer, offering insight into audience knowledge or interest levels. However, visibility into individual participants is limited by privacy settings. If a participant is not saved in the admin’s contacts, only minimal information is shown, such as a profile photo, while personal details like phone numbers and names remain hidden. This approach appears consistent with WhatsApp’s broader emphasis on user privacy, even as it expands interactive features.

The arrival of Channel Quiz on the iOS beta follows the introduction of the same feature in the Android beta earlier this month. This parallel testing across platforms may indicate that WhatsApp is preparing for a wider rollout, although no official timeline has been announced. As with many beta features, it is still possible that the tool could change before being released publicly or remain limited to specific use cases.

More broadly, the quiz feature reflects WhatsApp’s gradual effort to make channels more dynamic and competitive with similar broadcast-style tools on other platforms. By adding structured interactions that go beyond reactions and polls, WhatsApp appears to be positioning channels as spaces not just for announcements, but for ongoing engagement and feedback.
