WhatsApp is extending one of its most popular personalization features to Mac users. The latest update to the desktop app introduces chat theme customization, allowing users to choose from 38 color options—mirroring the functionality already available on the iPhone version.
According to details first noted by WABetaInfo, the update includes 22 preset themes along with customizable options for both color and brightness levels. The feature gives Mac users more control over the look and feel of their chats, with color choices that affect both message bubbles and chat backgrounds. The goal is to offer a unified visual style that still allows for individual expression.
Users can find the new settings under Settings > Chats, where they’ll be able to select from the available color palettes or upload custom wallpapers. Themes can be applied globally across all conversations or tailored to specific chats. WhatsApp has also added flexibility to mix solid background colors with subtle visual accents, giving the desktop experience a more refined look.
One limitation remains: themes set on the Mac don’t automatically sync with those on other devices. This means users can maintain distinct color schemes for the same chat across platforms—for instance, one look on their iPhone and another on their desktop.
The feature is currently rolling out in stages and may take a few weeks to reach all users. When available, it marks another step in WhatsApp’s ongoing effort to bring consistency between its mobile and desktop experiences while maintaining device-specific customization.
