After years of user requests, WhatsApp has finally launched a dedicated app for the iPad, expanding its ecosystem to Apple’s tablet line and offering broader support for cross-device messaging. The app is now available for download on the App Store, bringing key WhatsApp features to a larger screen format.
The release allows iPad users to make video and voice calls with up to 32 participants, share screens during calls, and toggle between front and rear cameras—mirroring functionality already present on the iPhone and desktop versions. The app also supports iPadOS multitasking features such as Split View, Slide Over, and Stage Manager, where supported, enabling users to message or participate in calls while using other apps simultaneously.
WhatsApp for iPad is designed to integrate smoothly with the broader Apple ecosystem. It works with accessories like the Magic Keyboard and Apple Pencil, allowing for flexible input methods and improved usability. The app also benefits from WhatsApp’s multi-device syncing technology, allowing users to stay connected across iPhone, iPad, and Mac without needing a persistent phone connection.

As with all WhatsApp applications, the iPad version maintains end-to-end encryption across messages, calls, and media. Features like chat lock provide added privacy controls, particularly useful for shared device scenarios, enabling users to keep specific conversations secure even when others have access to the iPad.
While this is the first stable release of WhatsApp on iPad, the company suggests it is only the beginning, hinting at future updates that will likely further align the app with iPadOS capabilities and user workflows.
The app supports most modern iPads, with certain multitasking features like Stage Manager requiring newer models such as the iPad Pro with M4 or the latest iPad Air variants. For users invested in Apple’s hardware but long frustrated by WhatsApp’s absence on the iPad, the release finally closes a major gap in the app’s multi-platform strategy.
