WhatsApp has rolled out a new feature for iOS users designed to reduce the all-too-common problem of forgetting to respond to messages. The update introduces “Remind me,” a built-in option that allows users to resurface specific texts at a chosen time.
The tool works by letting users assign either preset timers or a custom duration ranging from one minute to 24 hours. Once the timer expires, WhatsApp delivers a notification that appears much like a new incoming message but carries a “Reminder” tag to distinguish it from actual conversations. This way, the reminder functions as a subtle nudge without disrupting the natural flow of chats.
The feature is available across both individual and group conversations. Importantly, reminders are private, meaning no one else in the chat will be able to see if or when they’ve been set. Users also retain the ability to cancel a reminder at any time, giving the feature flexibility without adding friction to everyday use.
For many, the habit of leaving messages unread until there’s time to respond has long served as a makeshift reminder system. But that method can quickly break down when multiple conversations pile up or when important texts slip further down the thread. By formalizing a reminder function within the app, WhatsApp is addressing a simple but common pain point without requiring third-party tools or workarounds.
This addition fits into a broader trend of messaging apps experimenting with productivity features, as communication platforms increasingly compete to be more than just chat services. Whether WhatsApp reminders become a staple for busy users or remain a niche tool will depend on how seamlessly people fold them into their daily routines.
