VSCO adds AI Labs with smart object removal and RAW file support

VSCO is expanding its professional toolkit with new AI-powered image editing features, RAW file support, and smarter editing controls aimed at photographers and visual creators. The update introduces a dedicated “AI Labs” tab, giving users access to non-destructive editing, content-aware region detection, and advanced object removal capabilities.

The company says AI Labs is designed to make editing faster and more intuitive without compromising image quality. Users can highlight or circle an unwanted object, and the AI tool will replace it with background elements that match the original texture, lighting, and color. VSCO claims its algorithm minimizes artifacts and maintains detail, making it more precise than other AI-based tools from major smartphone platforms.

The update also introduces support for high-resolution RAW files, allowing professional photographers to edit directly in VSCO Studio while preserving the full dynamic range of their images. Non-destructive editing means users can experiment freely, revert changes, or adjust specific layers without affecting the original photo.

Coming soon is another AI feature called Upscale, which promises to enhance image resolution and sharpen fine details while maintaining composition integrity. The system is powered by Black Forest Labs’ FLUX.1 Kontext model, a high-performance generative model optimized for visual coherence and speed.

These new capabilities are exclusive to VSCO’s Pro tier, priced at $12.99 per month or $60 per year, with no usage limits on AI Labs tools. The company says the rollout reflects its goal of supporting photographers through technology that complements their creative intent rather than replacing it.

“Since our inception, VSCO has supported authentic creative expression,” said Eric Wittman, CEO of VSCO. “We see how AI is transforming photography, and our focus is to introduce tools that help creators achieve their vision while preserving the integrity of their art.”

The latest update follows a year of steady expansion for VSCO, which has been repositioning itself as a professional platform for photographers. Earlier this year, it introduced Workspace, a management hub for scheduling and client communication, and an AI-powered whiteboard that helps photographers collaborate with clients in real time. The company also launched a marketplace to connect photographers with potential clients.

VSCO’s AI Labs features are now available on iOS via the VSCO Studio app, with Android support expected to follow later this year.
