Threads, Meta’s alternative to X, has introduced a standalone Hidden Words feature, giving users more control over their content filters directly within the app. Unlike the previous setup, where Hidden Words were shared with Instagram, this update allows users to independently curate what content they wish to avoid on Threads without affecting their Instagram experience.
The Hidden Words feature lets users block specific words, phrases, or emojis from appearing across feeds, search, profiles, and replies. This is aimed at helping individuals tailor their viewing experience to avoid unwanted or triggering content. Notably, Threads has also added a time-based option for these filters. Users can now set temporary filters that automatically expire within a 30-day window, offering a way to mute topics for a limited time without committing to a permanent block.

This update is particularly useful in scenarios such as avoiding spoilers for new TV shows or live events. Users can temporarily mute related keywords and reintroduce them to their feed when they’re ready, enhancing their overall platform experience without long-term disruption.
The change follows closely on the heels of Threads testing a separate DM inbox, signaling Meta’s ongoing efforts to distinguish Threads as a more autonomous platform rather than just an Instagram extension. While Threads initially leaned heavily on its Instagram integration, these recent moves suggest a shift toward greater independence in both functionality and user customization.
Threads has been steadily adding new capabilities in its bid to compete with X. Recent updates include support for fediverse posts in a dedicated feed, user search functionality across federated networks, spoiler text options, and tools for creators to track engagement through shared links. With the rollout of standalone content controls like Hidden Words, Threads is continuing its push to offer a more refined and flexible user experience.
