Meta has introduced direct messaging to its social platform Threads, marking a significant functional expansion for the two-year-old app. The update follows a period of testing throughout June and reflects Meta’s continued efforts to broaden Threads’ capabilities beyond public posts and replies.
This is the first time Threads has offered a direct messaging option, and the rollout prioritises safety and controlled interactions. Messaging on Threads is currently limited to a user’s followers or mutual Instagram followers who are aged 18 and above. This restriction aims to reduce unsolicited messages and maintain a level of trust within user interactions, an approach consistent with Meta’s broader emphasis on user safety across its platforms.
Meta has indicated that additional messaging features are planned for future updates. These include message controls allowing users to manage who can contact them, group messaging functionalities to facilitate discussions among multiple users, and inbox filters designed to organise incoming messages more effectively.
Alongside the messaging feature, Threads is also introducing a new content discovery tool called Highlighter. Designed to surface unique perspectives that foster thoughtful conversation, Highlighter will elevate posts in users’ feeds that Meta’s algorithms deem particularly insightful or discussion-worthy. Over time, this feature is expected to evolve into a broader trending topics tool, highlighting emerging conversations across the platform.
The addition of direct messaging brings Threads closer in line with other major social media applications, particularly its sibling platform Instagram, which has long integrated private messaging as a core feature. However, Meta appears to be taking a more gradual approach with Threads, focusing first on user safety and healthy discourse before enabling wider open messaging.
Threads launched in 2023 as Meta’s text-based companion to Instagram, positioning itself as an alternative to X (formerly Twitter) by combining familiar Instagram branding with a feed-oriented, conversation-focused user experience. Since launch, Threads has introduced incremental updates to refine usability and integrate features supporting public conversations, but direct messaging had remained a missing component until now.
As Threads continues to expand its feature set, the introduction of private messaging and the Highlighter tool demonstrate Meta’s intent to create a more rounded platform that supports both broad public discussions and more personal, contained interactions. Whether these updates will significantly impact user engagement remains to be seen, but they mark another step in Threads’ efforts to build itself into a fully fledged social app within the Meta ecosystem.
