The PlayStation 6 is coming — what we know, what we’ve heard, and what we’re shamelessly speculating

The PlayStation 5 Pro is barely out of the box, but the internet is already daydreaming about its inevitable replacement: the PlayStation 6.
Sony hasn’t officially shown it, teased it, or even hinted at the shape of its controller. But thanks to industry leaks, insider whispers, and executives who love dropping vague hints, we’ve got a decent idea of where the next-gen winds are blowing.

If you’ve been wondering when you’ll need to start saving for the next big box under your TV, here’s what’s on the rumor menu.

When is the PS6 launching?

Let’s rip the bandage off: you’re not getting one this Christmas. Or next Christmas.
The safest bets right now say late 2027 or 2028. That’s based on PlayStation’s historical rhythm — about seven years between generations — plus some eyebrow-raising comments from people who should know better than to talk about this stuff.

Former PlayStation president Shuhei Yoshida thinks 2028 “feels right.”
Leaker KeplerL2 thinks the console’s chipset is already close to final and could point to a 2027 release.
And a Microsoft court filing (from the great “Activision Blizzard acquisition paperwork dump of 2022”) seemed to suggest Sony’s next machine would show up around 2027.

Translation: you’ve got time to finish your PS5 backlog. And maybe… your PS4 backlog too.

What’s inside the thing?

If the rumors are true, the PS6 is basically a sports car wrapped in a game console shell.

Most reports agree it’ll stick with AMD hardware, which means your PS5 library should work just fine on it. The current favorite guess is a Zen 6 CPU with an RDNA5 (or “UDNA”) GPU, capable of performance in the ballpark of an NVIDIA RTX 4080 PC. That’s three times the power of the PS5, with more realistic lighting, faster load times, and less reason to blame lag when you lose in multiplayer.

We’re talking targets of 4K at 120 frames per second or even 8K at 60fps for certain games, thanks to Sony’s home-grown upscaling tech, PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR).

Oh, and storage? Expect at least 2TB — because even indie games seem to be 50GB now.

What will it cost me?

The crystal ball here is murky.

The PS5 Pro already costs $700, so either Sony is testing the waters for a higher PS6 price… or that’s their ceiling. Analysts are split: some think Sony will aim for $500 to win hearts; others say $600+ is more realistic given rising hardware costs.

Let’s be honest — if the PS6 launches with all the rumored horsepower, no one’s expecting it to be cheap. Start stuffing that “new console” piggy bank now.

Features we might get

Here’s where things get spicy. A few leaks say Sony is preparing two different chips for the PS6 era — one for the main console, and one for… wait for it…

A new handheld.

The handheld sidekick

Yes, Sony might be ready to re-enter the portable arena in a big way. Codenamed “Canis”, this rumored handheld isn’t just a streaming gadget like the PlayStation Portal. Instead, it would run PS5-level games natively, but at lower resolutions and frame rates to keep it efficient.

Think between the power of an Xbox Series S and Series X, but in your hands — with possible docked mode output like a Switch. AMD RDNA5 graphics, AI upscaling, and ray tracing have all been whispered about. If true, it could be the most powerful handheld Sony has ever made.

So… when will Sony spill the beans?

History says Sony won’t talk about the PS6 until the PS5 Pro has had its moment — so don’t expect big reveals before 2027. In the meantime, the leak train will keep rolling, specs will be argued about on Reddit, and mock-up renders will appear every other week on YouTube thumbnails.

Bottom line

Right now, the PS6 is somewhere between an engineering project and a marketing plan. But if even half the rumors are accurate, we’re looking at a beast of a console, possibly launching alongside the first true PlayStation handheld in over a decade.

Until then, enjoy your PS5 (or PS5 Pro) — because you’ll miss it once the PS6 drops and your backlog triples overnight.
