Teams for macOS adds optional native screen-sharing picker

Microsoft is expanding its updates for Teams on macOS with a new screen- and window-sharing experience that taps into Apple’s native content picker. The feature, first previewed at Ignite 2025, moves away from Teams’ previous custom interface and instead relies on macOS’ built-in tools for selecting windows or displays to share. The change is part of Microsoft’s broader effort to make Teams behave more consistently across platforms while reducing friction in common meeting tasks.

According to Microsoft, using the system-level picker should provide a more coherent experience for macOS users, both in terms of interface design and security. Apple’s native content-sharing permissions already govern how applications access the screen, and integrating with those controls eliminates some of the extra prompts and overlays that Teams previously required. The company frames the shift as a usability improvement rather than a feature overhaul, though the practical benefit is simply a more familiar workflow for those accustomed to macOS conventions.

The new picker is not enabled by default. Users need to head to Settings and more > Settings > General, then locate the Screen sharing section and select the “Use macOS content sharing” option. The switch takes effect immediately without requiring a restart. The updated experience does come with a notable limitation: it does not support remote control, so users cannot give or request control of a shared screen while the native picker is active.

For now, the feature remains in preview and is restricted to Mac users enrolled in either the Teams Public Preview or the Microsoft 365 Targeted Release program. IT administrators must opt in by enabling preview features in Teams’ update policies or assigning Targeted Release access through the Microsoft 365 Admin Center. Feedback can be submitted directly through the Teams app, which Microsoft says will help guide the final implementation.
