Spotify expands AI playlist feature to podcasts with daily refresh options

Spotify is extending its AI-driven playlist tools beyond music, introducing a feature that generates podcast playlists based on simple text prompts. The update builds on the company’s earlier Prompted Playlist system and reflects a broader effort to reduce the friction involved in discovering spoken-word content.

For many listeners, podcasts present a paradox: while there is no shortage of content, finding relevant shows can be time-consuming. Spotify’s approach attempts to streamline that process by letting users describe what they want—whether it’s true crime, technology news, or niche interests—and automatically generating a curated list. The feature is now being expanded to include podcasts, rather than being limited to music as it was at launch earlier this year.

The mechanics are straightforward. Users enter a prompt within the app, and the system assembles a playlist based on that input. What distinguishes this update is the option to refresh playlists on a daily or weekly basis. In theory, this allows listeners to maintain an evolving queue of episodes tied to their interests, which could be particularly useful for keeping up with fast-moving topics like current events or industry news.

The rollout is currently limited to Premium subscribers in select markets, including the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, and Sweden. This staggered availability suggests Spotify is still testing how users engage with AI-generated podcast discovery before expanding it more broadly.

While the feature adds convenience, it also highlights ongoing limitations in AI curation. Automated systems can struggle with context, occasionally surfacing irrelevant or mismatched content. This becomes more noticeable with podcasts, where tone and subject matter vary widely—even within the same category. As a result, the tool may work best as a starting point rather than a fully reliable filter, especially for sensitive or highly specific listening needs.

There is also a broader strategic angle. Podcasting has become a key part of Spotify’s long-term content strategy, but discovery remains one of its weaker points compared to music. Features like Prompted Playlist indicate a shift toward more personalized, algorithm-driven navigation, similar to what streaming video platforms have been refining for years.

Ultimately, Spotify’s AI podcast playlists aim to make discovery faster and more tailored, but their usefulness will depend on how accurately they interpret user intent over time. For now, they offer a more flexible way to explore podcasts—provided users are willing to fine-tune results and treat the recommendations with some caution.
