Spotify adds visible play counts for podcast episodes in app and creator tools

Spotify is rolling out a new feature that adds a layer of transparency to podcast listening data: visible play counts for individual episodes. This update, now live across the Spotify app and its creator platforms, gives both listeners and podcasters access to the number of times an episode has been played—regardless of whether it’s an audio-only format or includes video.

Visible play metrics will appear throughout the Spotify interface, including the home page, episode pages, and show pages, making it easy to gauge a podcast’s popularity at a glance. The same information is also being integrated into Spotify for Creators and Megaphone, the company’s platform for podcast publishers.

For casual listeners, this feature offers a simple way to identify trending or popular episodes, potentially improving podcast discovery for those less familiar with a show or subject. It also mirrors a trend in digital content platforms where engagement metrics are increasingly placed front and center—something users already expect from platforms like YouTube.

For podcasters, the implications are more strategic. Being able to see which episodes draw the most engagement can help creators better understand audience preferences, whether that means favoring specific topics, formats, or guest appearances. It also offers a comparative measure, allowing creators to benchmark performance against similar shows. This can be especially useful for newer podcasters looking to grow or adjust their content approach based on real-time listener behavior.

Spotify’s decision to open up this data comes as the company continues to invest in its podcast ecosystem. Since launching podcast support in 2015, the platform has gradually expanded its toolkit for creators while seeking to attract more listeners and advertisers. The company’s Q1 2025 earnings report showed a 12% year-over-year increase in paid subscribers, reaching 268 million. CEO Daniel Ek noted that user engagement and retention remain strong, crediting the platform’s freemium model and steady rollout of features that keep audiences engaged.

The addition of episode-specific play counts isn’t just about vanity metrics—it’s a meaningful step toward giving users and creators alike more clarity into how podcast content performs. And while Spotify still trails behind YouTube in overall podcast reach and influence, features like this suggest it’s serious about closing that gap.
