Spotify adds prompted playlist to give listeners more control over recommendations

Spotify is expanding how subscribers create playlists, introducing a new feature called Prompted Playlist that gives users more direct control over how music is selected. The tool is scheduled to roll out to Spotify Premium subscribers in the US and Canada by the end of January, following a limited trial in New Zealand late last year. Its arrival comes as the company prepares for another price increase, positioning the feature as part of a broader push to make its recommendation systems feel more transparent and responsive.

Prompted Playlist is designed to let users describe, in plain language, what they want to hear, rather than relying solely on preset moods or automated mixes. Instead of passively accepting algorithmic suggestions, subscribers can actively guide how a playlist is built. Spotify frames this as a way to shape discovery rather than simply request songs, though the feature still depends heavily on the platform’s existing data and recommendation models.

In practical terms, the tool can draw from a listener’s full Spotify history, including saved tracks that haven’t yet been played. Users can also ask for playlists tied to specific movies or television shows, with the system pulling from current pop culture references, charts, and historical data. Each generated playlist can be refreshed automatically on a daily or weekly basis, and prompts can be edited at any time to refine the results. To add a layer of clarity, each track comes with a short explanation describing why it was included.

Spotify says early testers used Prompted Playlist in a variety of ways, from revisiting music connected to particular periods in their lives to filtering out songs they feel they have overplayed. Others focused on functional listening, such as long instrumental or lyric-free electronic playlists intended for work, or mixes built around artists tied to current trends and viral moments. These use cases suggest the feature is less about replacing traditional playlists and more about narrowing down large libraries into something that feels purpose-built.

The launch does introduce some overlap with Spotify’s existing AI Playlist feature, which will continue to be available. The older version offers more general recommendations, while Prompted Playlist is positioned as a more detailed and customizable option that can process a wider range of inputs. This distinction may not be immediately obvious to all users, and Spotify appears to be betting that clearer explanations within the interface will help reduce confusion.

Once the feature is available, Premium subscribers can access it by tapping Create and selecting Prompted Playlist. Whether it meaningfully improves music discovery or simply adds another layer to Spotify’s already complex recommendation ecosystem will likely depend on how well it balances user intent with automated selection over time.
