Sony celebrates 30 years of PlayStation with a limited mechanical watch

Sony PlayStation has marked its 30th anniversary with a watch collaboration that signals a shift in how the brand approaches licensed products. Partnering with watchmaker ANICORN, PlayStation has introduced a small collection that leans more toward collectible design objects than conventional gaming merchandise. Rather than aiming for novelty or overt branding, the release focuses on restraint, materials, and long-term appeal.

At the center of the collection is the First PlayStation Limited Edition Mechanical Watch, capped at 300 pieces worldwide. The limited production immediately places it in collector territory, but scarcity is only part of the story. Unlike most gaming-branded watches, which typically rely on quartz movements and bold visual cues, this model uses a mechanical automatic movement. That choice aligns the watch more closely with traditional watchmaking values such as durability, repairability, and longevity, rather than short-term promotional appeal.

The design language draws directly from the original PlayStation console released in the mid-1990s. Instead of large logos or bright accents, the dial features subtle, raised △〇×□ symbols, integrated as structural elements rather than decorative overlays. The hour and minute hands echo the shape of the original Start and Select buttons, a reference that will be immediately recognizable to longtime players without being distracting to those unfamiliar with the source material.

The case continues this approach. Finished in matte gray, it reflects the industrial look of the first-generation PS1, avoiding polished surfaces or unnecessary embellishment. Even the case back incorporates design cues from the console’s optical disc drive, reinforcing the idea that the watch is meant to translate PlayStation’s early hardware identity into a wearable format.

In addition to the mechanical model, the collection includes two quartz-powered Play Symbol watches, offered in Dark Mode and Light Mode variations. These versions are more accessible in price and introduce a more playful element, with floating symbols that shift as the watch moves. While less focused on traditional watchmaking, they still maintain a design-first approach rather than functioning as simple logo-driven accessories.

Taken together, the collection reflects a broader evolution in how PlayStation positions itself culturally. The watches suggest an awareness that gaming history now overlaps with design, fashion, and collector markets. By opting for mechanical movements, limited runs, and understated references, the collaboration moves beyond typical anniversary merchandise and into the realm of objects meant to be kept, worn, and appreciated over time.

The PlayStation x ANICORN watch collection launches on December 19, 2025, exclusively through ANICORN’s website, with prices ranging from approximately $250 to $780, depending on the model.
