Sigma 12mm f/1.4: a dream lens for astrophotographers announced

Sigma is pushing optical engineering to new heights again, announcing not one but two standout lenses: the 12mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary for APS-C cameras and the 200mm f/2 DG OS Sport, the world’s first lens of its kind. Both will officially launch on September 4, 2025, marking major milestones for astrophotographers, vloggers, and professional sports shooters alike.

  • World-First Sigma 200mm f/2 DG OS Sport
  • Why These Lenses Matter

Ultra-Wide Sigma 12mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary

The new 12mm f/1.4 becomes the widest member of Sigma’s APS-C f/1.4 prime family (joining the 16mm, 23mm, 30mm, and 56mm). On APS-C bodies, it offers an 18mm full-frame equivalent, filling a key gap for night-sky photographers who need both a wide field of view and a fast aperture.

  • Perfect for astrophotography: With its f/1.4 aperture, astrophotographers can capture expansive Milky Way scenes without needing to crank up ISO, reducing noise and enhancing detail.
  • Compact and lightweight: Weighing just 225g and measuring 68mm long, it’s ideal for travel and vlogging setups.
  • Durable build: Dust- and splash-resistant, designed for outdoor adventures in challenging conditions.
  • Price: £519 in the UK (US and AU pricing TBA).

Available for Sony E, Canon RF, and Fujifilm X-mount, this lens is also expected to come to Nikon Z and L-mount later, following Sigma’s usual rollout strategy.

World-First Sigma 200mm f/2 DG OS Sport

If the 12mm caters to astrophotographers, Sigma’s 200mm f/2 is a love letter to professional sports and portrait shooters. It’s the world’s first 200mm lens with an f/2 aperture, making it brighter than traditional 70–200mm f/2.8 zooms.

  • For sports and portraits: The f/2 aperture paired with the 200mm focal length creates intense subject isolation and creamy bokeh, ideal for indoor sports, concerts, or professional portraiture.
  • Optical stabilization: Features 6.5EV image stabilization with Sigma’s OS2 algorithm for razor-sharp handheld shooting.
  • Pro-level design: Dust- and splash-resistant, with responsive autofocus and advanced optics from Sigma’s Sports line.
  • Weight: 1,820g with a length of 201mm – heavier than zoom alternatives, but unmatched in brightness.
  • Price: £2,999 in the UK (US and AU pricing TBA).

Available initially for Sony E and L-mount cameras, this prime lens slots into Sigma’s elite pro lineup, joining the recent 300–600mm f/4 super telephoto zoom.

Why These Lenses Matter

The 12mm f/1.4 opens the door for APS-C shooters—whether astrophotographers, landscape photographers, or vloggers—to achieve shots previously impossible without bulky, full-frame glass.

The 200mm f/2, meanwhile, is a groundbreaking achievement in lens design. Offering one stop more light than the industry-standard f/2.8 zooms, it enables faster shutter speeds, better low-light performance, and unmatched subject-background separation.

Together, these two primes underline Sigma’s reputation for pioneering optics that give photographers and videographers unique creative tools not found elsewhere.

Both lenses go on sale September 4, 2025. More details can be found on Sigma’s official website.
