Sandisk unveils a massive 8TB SD card, perfect for photo editing

Sandisk has made a major leap in portable storage by announcing the world’s first 8-terabyte SD card, though its release date and price remain under wraps.

This jaw-dropping capacity was unveiled in a recent press release by Western Digital, Sandisk’s parent company. While we eagerly await details on its availability and cost, it’s worth recalling that Sandisk also previously announced the launch of 4TB SD cards, which are expected to hit the market next year. It wouldn’t be surprising if the 8TB version follows a similar timeline.

To put this capacity in perspective, 8TB can store an astounding 2,000 hours of high-definition video or 2 million high-resolution photos, making storage limitations a thing of the past for most users.

However, a crucial caveat is that any SD card exceeding 2TB carries the SDUC (Secure Digital Ultra Capacity) label. This implies that devices need to be SDUC-compatible to use these cards. Currently, this excludes all Apple devices, so we might have to wait for future releases, like the rumored M4 Macs, to support these high-capacity cards. If you’re looking for substantial storage now, you can opt for a 1TB SD card, compatible with most Macs, iPads, and iPhones.
