Roblox launches age-based accounts for users under 16 with stricter content controls

Roblox is introducing two new age-based account types for younger users as part of its latest safety updates, set to roll out in early June.

The platform will create Roblox Kids accounts for ages 5 to 8 and Roblox Select accounts for ages 9 to 15. These accounts will automatically adjust content access, communication defaults, and parental controls based on verified age, aiming to better match experiences to developmental stages. Users who have not completed an age check will remain limited to games rated Minimal or Mild, with all communication disabled.

To access games rated for users over age 9, Roblox now requires facial age estimation or ID verification. In a majority of Middle East countries, however, the age check will not enable chat features, which remain disabled in line with regional regulations announced in September 2025. The company reports that more than 50 percent of global daily active users and 65 percent of U.S. users have already completed age verification since it became mandatory for chat access earlier this year.

For Roblox Kids accounts, access is restricted to games carrying Minimal or Mild content maturity labels that pass a three-step selection process. All communication is turned off by default and cannot be enabled in regions where chat is restricted. The interface will feature a distinct background color to signal the account type.

Roblox Select accounts, intended for ages 9 to 15, allow games up to Moderate content maturity that also clear the additional vetting. In countries where chat is permitted, default communication settings for this age group stay unchanged. These accounts will likewise carry a visual indicator to distinguish them from standard profiles.

The system is designed to progress automatically as users age: children move from Roblox Kids to Roblox Select at age 9, and from Select to regular accounts at 16. Roblox says the majority of popular games should remain available to age-verified users under 16 at launch, though the catalogs will be dynamically updated.

A continuous evaluation process will govern which titles appear in the younger accounts. This includes developer ID verification, two-step authentication, and an active Roblox Plus subscription; real-time analysis of how older users interact with new content; and stricter content maturity ratings. By default, certain categories such as social hangouts or free-form drawing games are excluded from younger accounts.

Later in 2026, Roblox plans to adopt the International Age Rating Coalition framework, which provides region-specific ratings aligned with standards like ESRB in the United States and PEGI in Europe and parts of the Middle East. The shift could offer families clearer guidance rooted in local cultural expectations.

Parental controls are also being expanded. Parents will gain the ability to block individual games through age 15, manage direct chat settings where available, and approve specific titles that fall outside a child’s default account restrictions. Existing tools for screen time, spending limits, and visibility into friends and play habits remain in place until the child turns 16.

The changes reflect Roblox’s broader effort to address long-standing concerns about safety on a platform that has grown rapidly among children and teenagers. While the updates add layers of default protections and parental oversight, questions persist about the effectiveness of automated moderation at scale and whether age estimation technology can reliably adapt to a global user base with varying privacy regulations. No system eliminates every risk, particularly on a platform built around user-generated content.

Roblox has positioned these features as an evolution toward more age-appropriate experiences rather than a complete overhaul. The company notes that users aged 16 and older will see no changes to their current setup.
