Realme is expected to return to sub-brand status under Oppo, according to a report originating from China that points to a fresh round of internal restructuring among companies once associated with the BBK Electronics group. The information, published by Leifeng.com and attributed to internal Oppo sources, suggests that the move is part of a broader effort to consolidate operations and align long-term strategy rather than signal a retreat from the market.
Under the reported structure, Realme would once again operate within Oppo’s organizational framework, while retaining its own brand identity and market positioning. Realme founder and chief executive Sky Li is said to remain in charge of the brand, continuing to oversee product direction and day-to-day operations. This continuity appears intended to reassure partners and consumers that the shift is administrative rather than disruptive.
The report indicates that Oppo plans to take on a clearer leadership role, with Realme and OnePlus positioned as complementary sub-brands. Each would continue to pursue distinct marketing strategies, targeting different segments while sharing resources where it makes operational sense. The stated goal is to improve internal collaboration, reduce duplicated effort, and support Oppo’s broader global expansion ambitions in an increasingly competitive smartphone market.
From a practical standpoint, the change is not expected to affect Realme’s product roadmap. Upcoming device launches are reportedly proceeding as planned, with no cancellations or delays linked to the restructuring. One notable operational shift involves after-sales support: Realme is expected to be integrated into Oppo’s existing service network in China, which includes more than 5,000 physical retail and service locations. For consumers, this could translate into wider service coverage and more consistent support, though the impact outside China remains unclear.
The reported move also reflects a partial reconfiguration of relationships that date back several years. Realme originally launched in May 2018 as an Oppo sub-brand before becoming independent later that same year. At the time, the strategy allowed Realme to move quickly in online-focused and value-driven segments, particularly in India and Southeast Asia. Since then, the broader corporate structure has evolved significantly. BBK Electronics, once the umbrella for Oppo, vivo, OnePlus, iQOO, and Realme, was effectively dissolved in 2023, leaving Oppo, vivo, and imoo operating as separate entities.
If confirmed, Realme’s return to sub-brand status suggests a recalibration rather than a reversal. In a market facing slower growth, tighter margins, and rising development costs, closer alignment between related brands may offer scale advantages without fully erasing brand differentiation. Whether this structure delivers long-term benefits will likely depend on how much autonomy Realme retains as Oppo refines its multi-brand strategy.
