OPPO has signed a global patent licensing agreement with Volkswagen Group, under which the German automotive giant will gain access to OPPO’s portfolio of cellular standard-essential patents (SEPs), including technologies essential for 5G connectivity. The agreement aims to enhance user experiences in Volkswagen’s connected vehicle offerings across its global product range.

This partnership marks OPPO’s first bilateral patent licensing agreement with a connected-car manufacturer, reflecting the company’s efforts to expand its intellectual property applications beyond the smartphone sector. It comes at a time when automakers are increasingly integrating advanced connectivity features to support autonomous driving, real-time navigation, and vehicle-to-infrastructure communication.

Vincent Lin, Head of Patent Licensing at OPPO, commented that the collaboration with Volkswagen underscores OPPO’s leadership in cellular technology. He described the agreement as part of OPPO’s broader strategy to build a sustainable intellectual property ecosystem that drives innovation and industry growth over the long term.

Volkswagen’s Chief IP Licensing Officer, Robin Cefai, described the partnership as an example of efficient, business-focused collaboration within the standard-essential patent licensing space. Cefai highlighted Volkswagen’s commitment to recognising the value of intellectual property and finding sustainable solutions that benefit all stakeholders involved.

According to LexisNexis IPlytics, OPPO ranks eighth globally in overall 5G patent strength as of January 2025, with its SEPs distributed in over 40 countries, including the UAE and the wider Middle East. The company has filed more than 113,000 patent applications worldwide and holds over 62,000 granted patents, spanning areas such as 5G and 6G communications, artificial intelligence, charging technologies, imaging, and video.

This agreement arrives at a strategic moment as the UAE intensifies its focus on connected and autonomous mobility. The country launched 5G services in 2019, becoming the first in the Middle East and fourth globally to do so, and is actively advancing its smart city ambitions. Dubai’s Autonomous Transportation Strategy aims to convert 25 percent of the city’s transportation to autonomous modes by 2030, with projected annual economic savings of AED 22 billion. Driverless taxi trials are set to commence in 2026, underlining the need for robust connectivity infrastructure to support vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-network communication at scale.

5G’s low latency and high data throughput capabilities are widely regarded as critical enablers for autonomous vehicles, ensuring fast, reliable data exchange between vehicles, infrastructure, and cloud-based control systems. OPPO’s agreement with Volkswagen therefore reflects broader trends where telecommunications and automotive industries intersect to enable the next generation of mobility solutions.

By licensing its cellular SEPs to Volkswagen, OPPO strengthens its position as an intellectual property leader while supporting the automotive sector’s transition towards more connected and automated systems. The collaboration signals the increasing importance of cross-industry partnerships as companies align technological strengths to address future mobility challenges.
