OnePlus 6 – It will leave you glassy eyed with wonder

So here’s a question: how do we get our hands on an iPhone X for less than half the price? The answer, my friend, isn’t blowing in the wind, it’s encased in glass and it’s made in China.
Yes, I’m talking about the new OnePlus 6, the Chinese smartphone that’s giving iPhone a run for its money. And this one’s not half bad either.

Beauty: on the outside and in

In a burst of nostalgia, I recall the good old Nokias of yore, the ones that you could hurl against a wall and they’d come away with a little more than a scratch. But kids, don’t try that at home with this all-glass cellular device, the results can be quite devastating!

As long as you’re careful with it, you should be able to enjoy the large 6.28 inch HD+ AMOLED screen that’s basically been squeezed into a body the same size as last year’s OnePlus 5, to your heart’s content. That’s almost a whole extra inch on its predecessor! Who said size doesn’t matter?

And it’s not just the stunning glass curves that have replaced their aluminium counterparts, it’s what’s on the inside as well that counts. So how about the cutting-edge Snapdragon 845 processor from Qualcomm, 6 gigs of RAM and 64 GB storage? Packs a powerful punch, doesn’t it? Not to mention the latest version of Android 8.1 Oreo, AND it is part of the collection of smartphones eligible for the Android 9 P beta test.

Oh and you know where this phone really outdoes its rivals? Headphone jack! Yes, it comes with one, so if you were somewhat missing this feature in 2018 (and most of 2017), then you’d be pleased to know that the OnePlus 6 has brought it back, so don’t hit the road Jack!

Now, for those of you who carry two phones around (honey, it’s my workphone! Yes one word, not two, because it’s a thing I guess), you can leave the ‘other’ one at home for the dog to play with, because the OnePlus 6 has a dual sim feature that will accommodate two sims at once. Two sims one phone…

Finally, the phone still runs a custom version of Android called OxygenOS, which apparently will be as fast on the final day of the year as when you pop it out of the box. In other words, none of that ‘getting slower over time’ shenanigan so typical of Android phones. OnePlus have actually gone as far as to say that the phone will have “no lag of any kind” although it’s probably best you wait to see it until you believe it!

Camera

Smartphones with cameras mean you no longer have to clip your digital snapper to your belt or sling one across your shoulder. Okay, that would probably be a tagline from like 2003, but with each passing day in the world of innovative technology, we seem to be coming up with better and brighter solutions to our multitech problems.

The OnePlus 6 features a 16-megapixel selfie camera, which can also be used for facial recognition. Actually, the manufacturers claim that it is one of the fastest on the market with this function, using over 100 identifiers for security.

This phone offers a new dual camera system, complete with optical image stabilisation, offering better low-light shots and portrait mode. A-plus for the camera!

Notch what you want

Something that seems to irk smartphone users of today is the so-called ‘notch’ on the iPhone X. Yeah, you said it, first world problems. And guess what? They’re here to stay with the OnePlus model, and there really isn’t much to it other than the camera, speaker and LED. Guess that’s the way the smartphone crumbles in 2018.

But, if you really do despise it, you can cover it up with a nifty software update, i.e. the 2280 x 1080 (FHD+) OLED panel (try saying that five times faster).

Saved the best for last

Admit it, you want to save a buck or two (or 500), and reinvest that into a brand new gym membership, or an endless supply of 80 cent fig rolls. So here’s what’s going down. You’ll get this phone, beautiful glass casing front and back, and all, for a modest $529 (£469) for the 6gig RAM, 64 GB storage in a glossy ‘mirror’ black.
